It holds the glass together
Safety film does not stop glass breaking. It stops broken glass going anywhere — the pane cracks and stays in the frame instead of coming down in pieces. That is a different job from heat control, and it is chosen by thickness and site rather than by shade.

A city shopfront is rarely attacked with tools and patience. It is hit once — a boot, a bottle, a fist on the way home from town. Plain glass turns that single impact into a hole. Filmed glass turns it into a crack that stays in the frame, and the gap between those two outcomes is why street-level glass gets film.
A boot or a bottle at midnight
The most common damage to a city shopfront is not a burglary at all. It is one impact from someone walking past. With film the pane cracks, holds its shape and stays where it is, so the shop is not standing open to the street for the rest of the night.
Smash and grab depends on being quick
An opportunist is counting on one blow making an opening. When it takes five, loudly, in the open, most give up and move on. Film does not lock anyone out — it takes away the speed the attempt was relying on.
The morning after costs less
A cracked pane still in its frame is a glazier booking. A hole is an emergency board-up, a claim, stock exposed overnight and a day not trading. That difference usually outruns the price of the film the first time it happens.
Where it stops. Film does not make glass unbreakable and it will not stop a vehicle or somebody who has brought tools and time. Two things decide how much it buys you: thickness — 8 or 12 mil for entry risk, where 4 mil is enough for injury — and whether the film is bonded into the frame. Held only by the glass, a big filmed pane can still be pushed in as one sheet. Say entry is the concern when you ask, and the specification changes.
What each thickness actually holds
Every film here is 90% VLT and 99% UV rejection, so neither of those picks one for you. Tensile strength is what changes, and so does adhesion — in the opposite direction.

The range, including the dark ones
Safety film does not have to be clear. The dyed and charcoal lines do the same holding job at a shade you choose, which means one film instead of two layers when the glass needs both.

Read the two columns together. Tensile strength climbs six-fold from 2 mil to 12 mil. Adhesion goes the other way — it peaks at 4 mil and is down to 4 N by 12 mil. A heavy film holds far more glass but grips the pane less, which is why thick specifications are often fitted into the frame rather than left to the bond alone. It is also why the answer is a site call and not the largest number in the table.

Full-height windows, sliders and glass doors in homes with children. Older glass that predates modern safety standards is the common case.
Shopfronts
Street frontage, and the smaller pane beside a door — the one where an arm through the glass reaches a latch. That side panel is skipped more often than the big window and is the easier way in.
Surfaces that get tagged
Anti-graffiti film is sacrificial. When it gets tagged or scratched you peel it off and refit, instead of replacing the glass.
Safety film questions
Does it make glass unbreakable?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. The glass still breaks. What changes is that it stays in the frame as a cracked sheet rather than falling as fragments.
Will it darken the windows?
Only if you want it to. The clear line runs at 90% VLT and is effectively invisible. If the glass needs to be darker as well, the dyed and charcoal lines go down to 5% and do the holding job at the same time — one film rather than a safety layer with a tint over it.
Will it stop a ram raid?
No, and no film will. A vehicle driven at a shopfront is far beyond what any window film is rated for, and anyone selling it as ram-raid protection is not being straight with you. What film covers is the impact-by-hand end of the range — the kick, the bottle, the opportunist with nothing but their own weight behind it — and that is the majority of what actually happens to street-level glass.
Which thickness do I need?
It depends on the pane size, the glass type and what you are protecting against. That is a site call, not something to pick off a list — we look at the glass first.
How is anti-graffiti film different?
It is meant to be replaced. It takes the tag or the scratch, then comes off and a fresh layer goes on. Much cheaper than replacing a shopfront pane.
